Goodbye Michigan
The culmination of Mike's road trip was a visit to his old stomping ground:Traverse City, Michigan. I had been there once before, possibly before we were even married. We camped on the lawn of his family cottage and did some swimming, which is all I remember.
Of course we all know how cool that area has become in recent years so I was dying to get back up there. On short notice we booked the last VRBO in a 50 mile radius along with Will and Kristin, friends from High School who live in Indiana.
The house was ...quirky.
But despite the strange decor and rampant cobwebs, it was a very picturesque and central place from which to explore the Leelanau peninsula. We met a couple at a brewery who invited us sailing. We visited some lovely wineries. We drove all the way up to the north tip, to the lighthouse and ate whitefish dip with our feet in Lake Michigan. We had some incredible food and beer in Traverse city, shopped the farmers market and sat by the lake. All in all a very hipster weekend and one I will remember as purely American!

Hop Lot Brewery in Sutton's Bay
This wood frame brewery has a massive outdoor seating area in the trees. It felt like drinking in a forest. It was at their communal tables that we met our sailing friends. Hop Lot on Yelp
Towne Plaza Traverse City
Just incredible fresh and local food, excellent service and a great beer list. We sat outside in a large plaza and got to watch the town come alive for the evening. Towne Plaza on Yelp
